Jackson Community Recycling joins county

recyclingUntil now, Jackson Community Recycling has operated as a non-profit organization under a special joint agreement between Teton County and the Town of Jackson. However, as of July 1 the program will become an official division of Teton County, merging the county’s operation of the solid waste transfer station with the recycling facility at Adam’s Canyon and the town’s recycling initiatives.

The new Solid Waste and Recycling Division will be organized under the Teton County Engineering Department, while retaining the current staff and management of Jackson Community Recycling, along with an advisory board.

The reorganization and creation of the new division was requested after County Commissioners voiced approval of JCR’s past work and looked to increase their oversight and management of other waste diversion efforts in the town and county. With a goal of reducing waste entering the landfill and transfer station, the new division will look to expand efforts with composting, construction diversion, tire recycling, metal diversion and others at the transfer station and recycling center.

According to JCR Executive Director Heather Overholser, “As a division of the county, our organization will be able to make better, more holistic decisions regarding solid waste management and diversion in Teton County.” Overholser also added JCR will still be able to raise money from individuals, businesses and foundations, including through Old Bill’s Fun Run.”

Commissioner Ben Ellis added his support by stating, “We are excited about the new structure and have already seen cost savings in budgeting for the new fiscal year.”

Perhaps as a sign of more activity to come, JCR and Calico hosted “Here’s the Dirt,” a free composting workshop designed to educate and inform the community on how to get started with home composting. 22Local will keep you informed of more community events, news and workshops from JCR.
