Jackson job barometer: Low on work?

unemployment_officeThere are more workers than work in Teton County this summer, according to several local professionals.

Jackson Hole High School Career Counselor Les Bishop said, “It’s the worst summer I’ve ever had. I just can’t find any jobs for kids.” Bishop said he thinks jobs have either been held onto or college kids snapped them all up.

“Usually I put kids in jobs left and right. This year, I think I’ve put one kid in a job at a beauty salon and that’s it,” he said.

At Jackson Temp Services Inc., located at 325 W Pearl Ave., Rob Werner, the director, is saying the same thing.

“Definitely a lot more people looking for work this year than the past four years,” he said.

Werner attributed it to hard times around the country causing more people to look for jobs in thriving towns like Jackson, and people who had jobs not giving them up.

At the Job Service Center, on 155 W Gill Ave., a woman who was not authorized to speak publicly said things were looking “pretty bleak” compared to past summers.

And Hillary Bean, a soon to be senior at the high school, found a job at the Westside Store, but said her friends have been less fortunate. “None of them have jobs,” she said.

However, 22local wants to know how you are doing. Have you found a job this summer? Does it pay the bills? If you didn’t find a job, what are you going to do? Send us your comments. Thanks and good luck to you all.

Wow. This is inciteful news right here. No jobs in the valley? Who wouldn’t thunk. Ten years ago, people couldn’t get enough good employees, and now the applications are just piling up. I thankfully have a job, but its the same one I’ve had for years.

We welcome all comments, but those intended to spark dialogue are of course more productive and “insightful”
