Ask a Cop: What are the gun laws in Jackson?

Ask me a question, I'll give you an answer.
Question: What are the firearm laws in Jackson and Wyoming? I don’t want to carry a concealed weapon or anything, but I’d like to work on some target practice somewhere that is legal, but don’t want to pay to use the shooting range.
This week’s question is answered by Sgt. Alan John of the Jackson Police Department.
Sgt John: There are several answers to your question. In Wyoming you may possess a firearm legally. You may purchase a firearm legally from a private party to another private party without any special stamp or state registration. You may possess a firearm loaded or unloaded in your vehicle or in your residence without any special permit. You may not possess a firearm concealed on your person without a special permit. The CCW permit has restrictions and still does not authorize the holder to carry in a bar, school or public building. This also does not take into account the National Park restrictions.
The safest way to transport a firearm is unloaded and in a case. It is legal to target practice in the National Forest. The limitations that apply are specific to not being near campgrounds, and only where it is safe with a good backdrop etc. Other considerations that are important are that the items used as targets must be cleaned up completely and never left in the forest. The safety concerns in reference to shooting in the forest are serious and having that in mind the Jackson Hole Gun Club is such a safe alternative I would choose it every-time. If you buy an annual membership there is no daily use fee and the cost of the annual membership is under $100.00
Specific to the Town of Jackson, the discharge of a firearm in city limits is prohibited.
